House of Salviati
In 1971, entranced by the marvel and quality of Murano glass, Laurel’s president and co-founder, Harold Weiss, partnered on a lighting collection with the House of Salviati - a renowned Italian glass maker from the Island of Murano in Venice.
Founded in 1859, the House of Salviati is considered one of the most prestigious glass manufacturers in the world with unparalleled glass work across Europe including Westminster Cathedral, Tonhalle concert hall in Dusseldorf, and the Paris Opera House.
The House of Salviati produced six unique Murano glass sculptures which were then incorporated into lighting designs by Laurel.
The Salviati Collection for Laurel is pictured in the 1972 Laurel catalog - “Supplement A” with the caption “Murano art glass sculptures, original designs, created by the House of Salviati on the island of Murano, Venice, Italy are exclusive with Laurel Lamp.”
Some of the items were listed as lamps with the option of purchasing the sculptural portions separately. These included three “Ac-cent” Lites” named “Bird on a Rock”, “Swan”, and “Ribbon” which were offered with or without an illuminated case glass lite box (Laurel # V-1089).
Our foundation’s archives show the Salviati glass sculptures and lamps were first displayed at the Los Angeles Home Furnishings Mart in 1971.
Laurel’s collaboration with Salviati not only reaffirmed Laurel’s unparalleled emphasis on quality materials in its pieces but also the Laurel Lamp Company as a world class lighting manufacturer.
Laurel’s partnership with the historic House of Salviati not only reaffirmed Laurel’s emphasis on high quality material and production but also established the company as a world class lighting manufacturer.
